I was looking for stocking fillers over Christmas and found this mobile phone magnifier in Kmart https://www.kmart.co.nz/product/smartphone-microscope-converter/1002307
It was surprisingly good – (so much so I ended up keeping it, only for it to be snaffled by my paper conservator friend). Couldn’t comment on the longevity of the object but found it useful for when out and about in the galleries and stores to take a quick pic. It also has an inbuilt light. We inherited a Dino-Lite Pro Digital Microscope, model AM413T-FVW2, which has a UV function. That might be too much for pest ID, but it’s a great tool to have in the lab. Our Dino Lite also came to us with a stand, and it’s very handy. Our stand is limited to vertical movement only, but you can purchase horizontal arms separately, which might be nice when examining sticky traps. I found a stand similar to ours on Amazon for $99.00, but it looks like they also sell gooseneck versions which might be better than the more rigid stand shown in the link below: https://www.amazon.com/MS35B-Rigid-Tabletop-Designed-Dino-Lite/dp/B005625G10/ref=sr_1_5?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6te_5fz55gIVlODICh3WrwMfEAAYAiAAEgJGFfD_BwE&hvadid=410001591104&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9007478&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t2&hvqmt=e&hvrand=5179202576455615978&hvtargid=aud-837858999280%3Akwd-13125358108&hydadcr=24660_11410818&keywords=dinolite+stand&qid=1578691926&sr=8-5<https://www.amazon.com/MS35B-Rigid-Tabletop-Designed-Dino-Lite/dp/B005625G10/ref=sr_1_5?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI6te_5fz55gIVlODICh3WrwMfEAAYAiAAEgJGFfD_BwE&hvadid=410001591104&hvdev=c&hvlocphy=9007478&hvnetw=g&hvpos=1t2&hvqmt=e&hvrand=5179202576455615978&hvtargid=aud-837858999280%3Akwd-13125358108&hydadcr=24660_11410818&keywords=dinolite+stand&qid=1578691926&sr=8-5> William William Donnelly (he, him, his) Assistant Preventive Conservator & Affiliated Instructor WUDPAC Winterthur Museum, Garden & Library Direct 302.888.4680 5105 Kennett Pike Winterthur, DE 19735 winterthur.org From: [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> On Behalf Of [email protected]<mailto:[email protected]> Sent: Friday, January 10, 2020 4:17 PM To: Museumpests <[email protected]<mailto:[email protected]>> Subject: Re: [pestlist] Glue Trap Findings - Next Steps Adding a vote for Dino-lite. I am starting to experiment with one to see if it works for this (and other purposes). That would also give you the option of getting a good photograph. Even a “toy” one could work. One with a built in light would be best.
