Although design is a pretty obvious thing, I'd try to avoid getting bogged down with it. There are plenty of templates around we can use and we can turn a lot of options off: an exercise for others on the list is to Google for "Joomla templates" and see what we find that we like.
I notice that (at least when I checked earlier in FF on Win2k) the current template is badly written CSS, resulting in content "leaking" out of boxes. Fixing that kind of stuff is a nightmare if you didn't write the template.
