If I download a .deb file, and "dpkg -i xxx.deb" tells me I'm missing a
load of dependencies, is there a way to satisfy them automatically (eg
with aptitude/apt-get)?

I'm working via SSH to a server so GUI tools not an option, although if
they can help me in the future by all means mention them!

The .deb package (free AVG Linux anti-virus, if you're interested) is
not as far as I know in a repository that I can just add to apt's
sources.list and make everything easy.
