OK, downloaded and burned Finnix to CD, booted it and ran
"finnix-thumbdrive".

After partitioning the USB disk it throws up the help for mkdiskimage
and exits, presumably because mkdiskimage does not like the parameters
that finnix-thumbdrive is passing to it.

As far as I can tell, the commandline being generated by
finnix-thumbdrive is:
    mkdiskimage -4 /dev/sda 0 64 32
which also fails if I run it from the commandline myself.

Any suggestions?

The "0" looks wrong to me, but the whole commandline other than the
/dev/sda (which I pass as a parameter to finnix-thumbdrive) is hard
coded into the finnix-thumbdrive script suggesting that whoever wrote
that is happy with it.
