I am guessing that the process to load Ubuntu might be different than Knoppix, but I ended up formatting my 1.0 Gb Flash Drive with the HP Flash Formatting Tool that was mentioned at http://www.beezmo.com/FloobyDustDir/FDKnoppixUsbDir/FDKnoppixUsb.htm. However, the link was no longer pointing to the file so I googled for it. I just formatted the flash to FAT32 since it is a Windowws product. I don't recall partitioning the the drive to follow the ZIP disk standards though. The process that you mentioned does appear to follow it so that it can be compatible with more computers. I have also read that the partitioning configuration does not work too well with the 2 Gb flash drives.
