I have my ESVA use SMTP auth to prevent an open relay, and also for inbound
mail confirm that the mailbox/user exists to prevent passing random mail to my
server.

My colleague does actually use VMware Server (running on SUSE) to run his ESVA
machine, as do I. Currently I process about 100 or so mail per day for two
domains. The ESVA Guide
(http://www.global-domination.org/pdf/howto-esva-setup17.pdf) is pretty good,
as are the forums (http://www.global-domination.org/forum).
