No need. The Zen or Zen Plus 4GB units talk MTP (Media Transfer
Protocol). Install Gnomad2 if you're a GTK+/Gnome guy or install Amarok
with MTP support if you're a Qt/KDE guy.
Other software that supports MTP devices:

This will work for all newer Creative Labs hardware. The older hardware
such as the Zen Touch will be speaking the Creative-proprietary NJB
(Nomad JukeBox) version III protocol instead:

Please fire whoever advised you that the player would not work in linux
or OS X.
