I've offered similar items to second and third bidders of another seller,
but I always specify that I would list it at the agreed price and
buy-it-now, so that the buyer had recourse if something was amiss (such as
recourse if on eBay).

I've been successful in the past, however usually with Lionel train items
under $500.

He actually deals in phonographs on the side. He is a very nice guy. As
for if there were shilling in the auction who knows.

I once watched an oak upright 11 sell for $1500 on Ebay. I listed one on
Ebay that was nicer the following week and it only hit $325. Sometimes is
just takes two nuts to run the price up.

We constantly see price differences on Ebay. A beautiful Vic V with Spear
tip sold not too long ago for $4,000, while one just ended yesterday in the
same condition for only $3200.

I would find it hard to believe that if someone shilled it they would
continue until they won something. I would guess they would shill it up to
the reserve and let the next bidder meet reserve.

As for emailing the under bidders, especially when you are not the person
selling the original item. I can see why people would not answer the
emails. Too many scams going on these days.
