I've offered similar items to second and third bidders of another seller, but I always specify that I would list it at the agreed price and buy-it-now, so that the buyer had recourse if something was amiss (such as recourse if on eBay).

I listed one on Ebay that was nicer the following week and it only hit $325. Sometimes is just takes two nuts to run the price up. We constantly see price differences on Ebay. A beautiful Vic V with Spear tip sold not too long ago for $4,000, while one just ended yesterday in the same condition for only $3200. I would find it hard to believe that if someone shilled it they would continue until they won something. I would guess they would shill it up to the reserve and let the next bidder meet reserve. As for emailing the under bidders, especially when you are not the person selling the original item. I can see why people would not answer the emails.
