Anyone with knowledge of phono prices wouldn't pay $1000.+ for a VV-IX.

I doubt very much that the buyer of this machine had any knowledge of 
phonographs.

I have been at tons of auctions where the local yuppie couple thinks a 
phonograph would look great in their living room and grossly over pay for 
it.

For that matter I have seen antique dealers (not phonograph dealers) grossly 
overpay at auctions.
