Or powdered mica, which is much easier to get a hold of. If the original graphite and Vaseline has oxidized to a lumpy solid it must be removed from the spring by mechanical means. Or the use of chemical solvents that are no longer available.

Molybdenum-disulfide  performs the same function as graphite without the 
abrasive qualities of the graphite.
