This is one of the things I'm missing: in my opinion, PHP needs to have a precise roadmap (like Mozilla has for example) what will come for PHP 5, 5.1, 5.2 and so on... Jim's argument about using ext/java: I haven't used this extension until now, but developers told me that this extension is not very stable and not really recommendable for productive use (memory leaks, extension hasn't been further developed for more than a year etc.).
