I only have a Piler: ERROR in my GUI but mails are coming in just fine. Mail.log doesn't show any error when starting tho. My Smarthost sometimes errors but works also great... this might be in the Piler/Service check ?
check config-site.php for PILER_HOST. It should match your FQDN or IP- address of piler.
Is there a way to do failover in some way ? or have 2 boxes running which you can merge or so ?
no failover feature 8yet). The best bet is to setup two independent archives, and have your mail server to forward emails to both. Then your users normally use only one host, however in case of a failure you may fix the dns entry of the gui, and users start using the other host. And as usual, it's highly recommended to backup the archive. If you have a virtualized environment, then cloning a VM, and provision the copy is pretty straightforward.
