Lawana, A cystic mass is simply a liquid-filled mass, as opposed to a solid mass. A cystic tumor can still cause hormonal imbalances. I, personally, do not believe there are "non-functioning tumors." Any mass on our pituitary gland can and does cause hormonal imbalance. "Non-functioning" means that the tumor does not secrete excess hormones, unfortunately the majority of physicians believe it means that the tumor causes no hormonal problems at all. I have never had surgery, but I have been told that my pituitary abnormality is anywhere from a craniopharyngioma, to an adenoma, to an artifact on my carotid artery. You are correct in believing that every doctor has a different opinion. I have received seven different opinions regarding my pituitary abnormality. I have over half a dozen hormonal diseases, yet not one physician believes they have anything to do with the pit abnormality. I have dozens of unexplained hormonal symptoms, yet not one physician believes the pit abnormality causes any of my symptoms. We have to fight for our care and treatment. Medical science knows very little about the endocrine system and it's control over all bodily functions. We have to educate them as we educate ourselves. Take care. Meri |
