It is also important to know how many pituitary surgeries your doctor does per year. If you have a tumor that is wrapped around the carteroid artery, you might want to consult with a neurosurgeon that is an expert with pituitary neurosurgery. You may not want to risk surgery with a surgeon who only does one or two surgeries a year. The PTNA has some nice published helpful guidelines on what to look for in a neurosurgeon ( I believe on their website). Some of the published data says that you should see a surgeon who does at least 20 surgeries a year, and the pituitary neurosurgeons themselves will argue that hormone secreting tumors should be handled by surgeons who do at least 50 a year. The surgeons who do more surgeries are up-to-date on the latest techniques, and are most likely part of a larger hospital complex that has the latest in technological advances, including image-guided-surgery, higher tesla MRI and even possibly interoperative MRI. Ask your surgeon alot of questions, and don't be afraid to seek the counsel of a pituitary surgeon at a major center for an opinion. |
