Hi. Acromegalic here. J

I’d get my blood retested if I were
you if only because of the not-having-eaten-for-two-weeks thing.

What kinds of symptoms do you have?
Acromegaly usually results in weight loss with the person ending up “big”
but very very thin, at least when the GH is actively high. It doesn’t
always result in being super-tall though if the high IGF-1 and GH start after
puberty. When the problem arises after puberty, it’s mainly the
hands, feet and jaw that get big. Some height growth is involved, and
soft tissue swelling is definitely an issue (including your organs, tongue,
joints, hands, face). Skin tags are also often a problem for some.

I can’t say for sure about the
appetite thing. When my Acromegaly was highly active, I ate a lot (and
never gained weight). I don’t remember losing my appetite at all.

Subject: igf-1 levels &
acromegaly diagnosis

Hi guys. I am new here but some of you know me from MaryO's
Cushing's board, where I post a lot even though I don't think I have
Cushing's. I am not diagnosed but my endo suspects a pituitary
problem. Anyway...I had one of those "what the *&[EMAIL PROTECTED] is
happening to me" moments the other day when I pulled a baseball cap out of
my closet (one that I hadn't worn in about a year) and it was too small to fit
on my head. So now I am wondering about acromegaly. But I did have
IGF-1 tested and it was okay...it was 330 and normal range is 114 - 492 (I am
25yrs old.) So I am wondering, is a single normal IGF-1 sufficient to
rule out acromegaly, or is it one of those things where you need a glucose
tolerance test or something to make the diagnosis? Also when I had that
blood drawn for the IGF-1 test, I hadn't eaten at all for 2 weeks.
Seriously. I know that really screwed up some of my other tests and made
the results hard to interpret, and I read that fasting lowers IGF-1, so I don't
know what to think.

I don't have the typical acromegalic appearance, although my appearance
has definitely changed significantly. I don't know, maybe I am just
grasping at straws here looking for an answer. Any of you guys with
acromegaly have major problems with appetite loss or nausea? These are
big problems for me, and I have eaten extremely little for months but gained
about 30lbs very quickly. My endo says it has to be fluid retention (and
it really doesn't seem like I have gained fat) but it isn't "typical"
edema and he has no explanations. I know GH promotes fluid retention too
so that's another thing that got me thinking.
