Sherry- Gettign SSD can sometimes be a nightmare- now, depending on what your
other diseases are, you might stand a better chance of getting it quickly. The
main determining factor of course is whether or not your conditions meet
guidelines for dissability, but this is not always the case as some conditions
can dissable but are not recognized by SSD as being dissabling. Your best bet
is to find a sympathetic doctor that can 'vouch for you' and is willing to
write a letter recomending dissability. This will help. Whewn I first applied,
they started giving me a hard time because my condition, Crohn's disease,
wasn't concidered a dissabling condition, but after I got a Doc to vouch for
me, and after the SSD department reviewed my surgeries and saw what I'd gone
htrough, they called me on like the 4'th or 5'th month and said "You should
have been on SSD since you were 18- we've determined that you're dissabled, and
you will be enstated 'shortly'" Shortly lol- too kmany more months, but I did
eventually get it. The woman I spoke with was really nice- but soem in the
department can be not so understanding as they deal with cases day in and day
out that just don't meet the requirements. The fact that you have other
diseases though I think will really help your case, especially if they have
worsened since getting acromegally. Some htings to know- I hope your
previous jobs were fairly high paying, as the SSD will be based on what you
previously made. I only worked minimum jobs during my teens and twenties, and
as a result, I get the absolute minimum SSD, which is 3 times below the poverty
level for a single person. The only real saving grace is that my Medical
expenses are paid for in full by Medicare and my supplies are paid for as well
which amounts to quite a lot- especially with all the surgies I've had sicne
goign on SSD. Anyway, the higher your previous paychecks, the more you'll get
which will hopefully be near maximum where you have kids, and note also that
you can earn a certain amount while on dissability- but this is somethign I
never messed with since one, I'm too weak, and 2, I didn't want to get into all
the paper work and to have to be reevaluated more frequently (You'll have to be
reevaluated every couple of years to see if you're still dissabled
unfortunately) My last reevaluation was right after I had come home from
surgery for hte CRohn's, and they just cancelled my reevaluation stating that
they'd determined I was still dissabled without hte exam. Going htrough hte
whole process is a pain, but if you need it then you need it, and there's
really no other choice. You'll need plenty of patience. This part is
important- If you haven't already, then make sure you keep goign to Docs
regularly and make sure they are made aware of how you are sufferign with all
your conditions combined. The reason for htis is that the SSD looks at all your
med records, and them ore you have, and the more they see that treatment isn't
working, the better your chances will be of speeding hte process, and making a
convincing case. Recomendations for applying for SSD always state to make sure
you are faithful about goign to hte docs on regular basis, and often, and
making sure you list EVERYTHING to your docs. SSD needs to see that treatment
is failing in your case. Google "Recomendations for applying for SSD" for
more hints about what to do. It's not like we;'re tryign to defraud the system,
but we do need to make sure we udnerstand hte process because it is a rough
process, and hte better we know what to do, the better our chances. I didn't
know any of it when I applied, and could have probably avoided some delays had
I known.
