Suppose we had an
IPS action for /etc/services updates, and suppose in some release of
OpenSolaris we changed the format of /etc/services.
I *explicitly* addressed this case. I pointed out that even if services
moved to an all-xml format, it wouldnt matter, if you had a more abstract
"services" concept, as part of the package-format<->packager API.
Not that I care so much about the /etc/services interface that much,
intrinsically.
I was more pointing out that a mantra of,
"
The more the packaging system knows about Solaris internals, the more
difficult it is to make upgrade work across a wide variety of releases.
"
is actually counterproductive. It's the package-format<->packager API that
needs to stay simple, not the package-system<->OS interface.
