Subject: [PLUG] Who will sign-up for BSNL's new DataOne broadband service?

Hi,

Anyone here interested or planning to sign-up for BSNL's new home
plans for DataOne ADSL 2+ broadband?

Any info on how to connect Linux? Will it be a DHCP IP or some
problematic dialup procedure?

Just curious, since Im also thinking about getting the 512k (5gb) or
1mbps (10gb) connection ASAP or as soon as its available to me!

Cheers,
Vishal

Hi,

this is my story about my enquiry regarding the BSNL broadband service. You may consider these facts to take your decision.

To start off, I visited the URL mentioned in some mail earlier on the list. It does not contain any info regarding Linux support or any othe rtechnical info I wanted to know.

So, I called up 1500 (thats the BSNL call centre number) and started enquiring about some technical things. The first shock I got was "the person saying your normal 33.6k dialup modem should be fine for the broadband connection. I dont have to get any other modem." Obviously it was wrong, and I told him to give the call to any other senior, technical person. Somebody else talked to me but was even more confused after getting my simple technical questions( do you require a dialer, is it available on linux....etc...) So he directed me to another call centre no specifically for internet support.

I called up there and got a reply that they dont know anything about broadband and gave another no of Karve Road exchange. Finally, instead of calling up, I went to fill up the form and getthe technical queries answered. Well, the answeres I got were absolutely crazy ( eg: you will get everything in the internet we provide). The person doesnt seem to know anything other than M$window$. Neither they have any info about any dialer required and/or if it is supported on linux.

Finally, I was fade up, just filled up the form and went off.

Well, this obviously means that they dony have the slightest knowledge on technical things and we can expect the same troublesome sancharnet or DIAS service.

Anyway, Rs. 500/- per month for the package they are offering could be worth considering just for the cost benefits.

ps: I got a call today and they actually checked something on the line for broadband connection. thats tooooo fast...for BSNL to respond...
