That's true. I heard about it but didn't feel like yet another layer
between me and the database.

Argh. Yes. I forgot to mention this because I've grown completely used to
Perl's "regexp anywhere" features that I totally forgot the wretched
function-style regexp support in PHP. I think they're just thin wrappers
around the system regexp library.
