I have been tasked with providing e-mail and Web access to our company by
the end of April. Unfortunately, because of my present job responsibilities
I don't have the time to read through *all* the How-TOs. My Linux skills are
a bit rusty. Could you help me out? I just need some pointers.
I know I can do these using Windows NT/2000 but I want to save on costs.
I am providing 'Net access via WinGate using Windows 98SE at present.
I have managed to set up a file server and domain using Samba in Slackware
7.0.
* Our company has reserved two (2) domains: decision.com.ph and decision.ph
* We will access the 'Net by means of a modem installed on the Linux server.
We will not have a permanent connection.
* We need to route mail internally. We will also, however, need to send &
receive mail on the 'Net using our domain.
* Internal e-mail should not have to go through the ISP's mail server
* Internal e-mail will be in this format: [EMAIL PROTECTED] or
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
* Users on the 'Net should be able to send and receive e-mail to and from
us, respectively, using the above format
1. The ISP we plan to use says that they will queue mail to and from
us on their servers using our reserved domain. But what about our internal
e-mail?
2. Do we need to set up our own internal e-mail server that will
periodically queue outgoing mail and pull incoming mail and route it to the
appropriate person? What software do we need to use to perform these tasks?
3. Will QMail be okay or do we use sendmail (arghhh) as our mail server?
Which e-mail server is the fastest/easiest to set up?
5. We need IP masquerading to allow Web access, right?
6. To speed up Web access I'm thinking of using Squid. Will it work properly
with IP masquerading? How?
7. I've heard that with Squid I don't need to set up IP Masquerading. Is
this correct?
8. Do we need to set up our own DNS server? What type (caching, etc.)?
We have the right to use Domino 5.0. We don't have Domino skills and our
Domino for Linux hasn't arrived yet. We only have Domino for NT right now
:(.
What topics do I need to know? Which software do I study/use? Which
subjects/How-TOs will I need to study?
What questions will I need to ask from the ISP?
The answers to these questions might also be useful to others who are also
in the same situation as I am (trying to use Linux as an alternative to NT).
Thanks to everyone in advance!
