K&R2, and Peter van der Linden's Expert C Programming: Deep C Secrets. I
don't have to program in C++ often, but I can recommend 2 O'Reilly books:
C++ The Core Language, and Practical C++.

Joe Celko's books, like SQL for Smarties and SQL Puzzles & Answers, if only

able to find a copy of the Practical SQL Handbook at places like DataBlitz.

Tannenbaum, and The BSD Demon book.
