K&G? I never heard of it!!

Personally the books I used in my "formative years" would be..

the original K&R C book

"Programming In UNIX" (or something like that) by Kernighan and Pike
(includes discussions of all the numerous UNIX tools, not just CC)

"Advanced Programming In The UNIX Environment" by W. Richard Stevens. I
believe that if there's ONE book you GOTTA have, this is it.

"UNIX System V Network Programming: Sockets and TLI" also by Stevens (did
I get that right?) although IMHO it's far below the quality of the APUE

and you mustn't underestimate the Net.
