K&R is Kernighan and Ritchie's "The C Programming Language". I bought my
copy four years ago for only 80 bucks...I have no idea if such a great
deal is still out there!
Another good book to get is Kernighan and Pike's "The Unix Programming
Environment." It's a REALLY OLD BOOK...but it's surprising just how much
of that book is still relevant to today's Unices. It's a gold mine of
shell programming tricks, Unix programming in C (old-fashioned non-ANSI C,
of course; the ANS-X3J11 committee that standardized C did not even exist
when the book came to press twenty years ago!), and descriptions of how to
write man pages using nroff and troff. Unfortunately, I'm not sure if you
can still find it today...

"The Annotated C++ Reference Manual" by Margaret A. Ellis and Bjarne
Strostrup.
