Errr.... the whole point of going to ext3 is the journaling functionality.
therefore, you don't need e2fsck in the first place. Although an exchange
of e-mails from stephen tweedie confirms that you can e2fsck a "cleanly 
unmounted" ext3 filesystem if you so desire. 

As for the other tools... mount works fine. you might also need
debugfs(which can be found in the e2fsprogs package.) if you want to go
back to ext2.
