Is the floppy an msdos-formatted floppy?
If it is not formatted or if the diskette is old,
linux can not auto-detect its fs type. To help when linux
can not auto-detect the fs type on the floppy,
you can supply the fs type in the mount command:

mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

Instead of msdos, you can also use vfat (for long file names),
or minix (on boot floppies), or ext2 (also for boot
floppies).
