For example, the SPECint2000 ratings for some common PC's:
asus a7n8x + athlon xp 3200+ -- 1044
epox 8kha+ athlon xp 2200+ -- 738
ga-7dx + athlon 1.2ghz -- 443
dell pw330 1.4ghz p4 -- 493
dell pw340 2.66ghz p4 -- 936
dell pw410 700mh p3 -- 307
dell pw420 1ghz p3 -- 454
you'd be surprised to note that an athlon xp 3200+ barely puts out 2X the SPECint performance of a 1GHz pentium III. and that's because... overall system performance is heavily affected by DISK I/O. and disks don't follow moore's law.
in other words... get the cheapest machine you can afford. they're all relatively the same in speed anyway.

i would agree...i built a system once for my friend the cost was less than 30k.
it was an AMD64 system. the same P4 with the same specs can cost around 30k+..
