afaik fdisk only creates the partitions. you would need a separate utility to 
create the actual filesystem that will reside in that partition. the tools 
usually start with mkfs. 

once i tried to wean myself out of the mandriva wizards so i tried 
repartitioning a hdd in a pure cli fashion. i didnt find out how to properly 
create a reiser fs and since my time was running out i just used the diskdrake 
utility. no such misfortunes on the ext3 partitions though. your mileage might 
vary.
