Hi, all: Just a suggestion -- to PLUG/FSF members, officers, concerned individuals -- that we can maybe incorporate into this brewing discussion.
The formation of a technical working group for the legislation of the FOSS law is, as I see it, a very welcome development in pushing for FOSS -- quality FOSS, even, as Dean is saying -- not just in the bureaucracy but in other sectors as well. We should see the legislation as a venue to air our side on the matter. (Whether they're heeded or not is another matter altogether, but we'll get to that later.) I suggest that PLUG/FSF/SFD or any concerned individual work together with the TWG and with Rep. Teddy C's staff in drafting a strong position paper encompassing all ideas put forth here and in succeeding consultations. The SFD celebration on Saturday is a great venue for this. That's what we need: a position paper that will be presented during the bill's deliberations. I can help draft that paper. I know of other people willing to help, as well. The contents of the position paper? Summary of our understanding of FOSS and what it ought to do for us and the nation at large, for one. I suggest we look at the bill as a takeoff point. This being a piece of legislation, we may have to take the bill apart. We can work that route, too. I'm sure Rep. Casin~o's staff will be more than willing to help us out in the draft, as well. :) What do you think? -- Ian Dexter R.
