That's one of the features of the GPL that keeps software free. Without
it, people would use GPL code to create proprietary software, essentially
taking the work of FOSS programmers and quite likely using it against
them. FOSS developers, on the other hand, would not be able to do the same
with proprietary code and use it to compete with the proprietary software
manufacturers. So the GPL protects FOSS developers to a certain extent.
The GPL takes a pro-active stance when it comes to promoting freedom. The
other licenses are more laid back and passive.
