Thanks for your input guyz.
Did try compile the kernel using the distro-supplied config.
I cannot however boot with the new kernel.
There is an error with /dev/ or something.
I suspect its the mkinitrd.
Tried mkinitrd -o /boot/initrd.img- 2.6.22-16 2.6.22-16
    results: kernel panic
Tried mkinitrd.yaird -o /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-16 2.6.22-16
results: error in /dev/sda or something

i strongly urge you to look at what computer is telling you and post a more detailed description than "or something"

look at what the screen says as it scrolls by and make a note of where it failed--- look at it from the beginning. the last error may not be the actual error. also check your /var/log to diagnose your problem if it was able to capture your boot process.

you can find devices your computer has by doing an lspci then just turn on the stuff when you do make menuconfig

also, if you're using an image... did you by any chance forget to turn it on, when you compiled the kernel? did you also check before you compiled if you had sata running? did you encounter any errors when making the kernel? did you check ur grub/lilo if you passed the right parameters on boot?

cheers.
