Sorry Dido... GMail mobile sent this direct to you! Anyway, Ubuntu 7.10 x64 (strictly speaking, amd64) is a success! I just had to use the "alternate" install for a text mode install - my first time. This was because the regular installer had no video output.
The installer did not detect the "atl1" network chipset on the Asus, but upon boot all was well. Next up... the reason I chose x64... kvm.
