ALL of the dot files just to test and see if something in there is mucking things up? I really think it boils down to something that you're restoring into your home directory or if you're adding things to /etc from other distros or version of gnome from Ubuntu. Without knowing everything that is being restored it's hard to say. Maybe if you're happy with OpenSUSE it's no longer an issue but an idea to keep in mind if something breaks again in the future.
