John,

Mandriva has improved a lot in the last couple years. I don't subscribe to
any of their programs. I only use Mandriva 2010 One, it's free and it's
fine. It's not perfect, but no distro is.  I normally use Gnome, but their
KDE version is very good. Plus, their forum is one of the most helpful I've
used.

Try it for yourself and see.

Arch Linux is also very good. Takes more time to set up but from my
experience it's cutting edge with more stability than Fedora.
