The box in question is an Intrepid desktop that has no root
password set. The only password that exists is jjj's password.
Therefore, the "could not authenticate" error message was perplexing.
Yes, I checked the capslock key.

Half an hour later I noticed some other things were acting weird on the
box in question. Windows were redrawing strangely. Stuff was taking
forever to respond. A solid black line suddenly appeared across the
monitor, as though the LCD screen had a defect. In the end I decided to
reboot (first time in about six months). Afterward I had no problem
"unlocking" stuff with my password.

Something was messed up. I'll probably never know what. I do intend to
create a root password on the box, however. Just as soon as I figure
out how to do so on Ubuntu.
