If you're willing to use the work laptop sort of in the mode of a secondary monitor then I would highly suggest looking at Synergy.
http://synergy-foss.org Cross platform, simple configuration, free as in beer, free as in speech. I haven't used it personally in a couple years but I have found it to be the right tool for the job and fairly stable on several occasions.
