This will happen when there's nothing in the KVM to keep the signal alive to 
the system(s) you are switched away from. Those ports time out, and stop 
listening. Basically, the system you've switched away from believes there's 
nothing plugged in any more, and switching back doesn't re-establish the 
connection. Sometimes unplugging/plugging will restore the connection, but 
that's a pain when you switch back and forth hundreds of times a day, and not a 
good idea on some video or PS2 ports. 

If the KVM is a good one, it reads the devices upon startup, and then when the 
system queries the various ports, it passes the info along. When the KVM is 
pointed at a different computer, it does whatever keep alive needs to be done 
on any ports attached to other computers. 

At least, that's how it was explained to me.
