Thanks much, Rich,. >> I need technical expertise in solving these routine home/office problems. > > That's what we do here. God; i love people who seem to really believe in open-source. >> And right now, my xubuntu laptop is refusing to communicate thru my >> network to my older hp-4100 laser printer. > > Write a description of your system, > how you're trying to communicate with your printer, > how your network is configured, I have access to 3 laptops, each of which is an ibm-thinkpad, 64-bit, dual-cores, with 4 - 8 gigs of memory. Two are xubuntu, the one from an ex-housemate is microsoft windows 7 or 8; the latter of which i am not at all familiar with. All machines except the printer are connected wirelessly; to the Router supplied by WaveBroadband, which i believe is this Router-Model, here: http://www.tp-link.us/products/details/cat-9_Archer-C7.html And this picture seems to be my printer: http://www.amazon.com/Hewlett-Packard-4100N-LaserJet-Printer/dp/B00005AKAMekdata=1e43f67fdc5c28008200d7e31bdeefd7 My router & printer are connected with an ethernet cable. I have tried powering them both down & back up, once router first, once printer first. Still no connection. My internet-connection is working fine; so i know the prob is not between my laptops & the router. My main xubuntu # 1 system, i am using now; & i have deleted the old reference to my HP-4100 in its printers control panel, & i tried to re-install, but i get a "Authentication" window, saying: "You must log in to access workgroup"; & i try all of my normal passwords, & nothing works, & i can not get past this interface. My other xubuntu # 2 laptop still has in its printers control window, the icon for the old HP-Laserjet 4100 series printer. That icon used to work from both xubuntu systems; but it suddenly stopped working. When i try to print a test-page on my Xubuntu 2 machine the "status" window says the job is "held". Nothing prints. > and what results you see. > For example, > using the CUPS admin page http://localhost:631 > is the printer on-line and sitting idle waiting for a job? Yes. Thanks. I forgot how to access this control-panel. My HP Printer's Status is "Idle". > What happens when you use that interface to print a test page > (under the printer maintenance menu)? When i click on the live-link to my hp-printer; i get the following error message: "The address wasn't understood". The precise ip-address it is trying to go to, is: ipps://charles-ThinkPad-T500.local:631/printers/Hewlett-Packard-HP-LaserJet-4100-Series I see No "interface to print a test-page". I see nothing which even remotely resembles any "printer maintenance menu". Pull-down menus from the top, read as: Coup.org Home Administration Classes Help Jobs Printers Those are all of my main options. > Sometimes, deleting the printer and > re-installing it fixes communications problems. > Give that a try. Done; previously. I can not get the re-install job completed. I can not get past the demand for a password to enter a "Workgroup". > Then tell us what you've tried and the results. > Less expensive and quicker than a home visit in many cases. No doubt. Pluss; it forces me to learn my own system better. "Teach a man to fish"; excellent philosophy. > Worth a try. I believe ive given some good additional data here; & am looking forward to further responses. Will reply to John's comments next. Thanks much, Rich.
