John; Thanks much for your insightful suggestions; to which i reply more fully below.
But i just now replied to Rich with similar data as what i will be sharing with you here; but i dont want to be overly-redundant in what i say; but at least some of that data will need to be re-said here-in; as follows: On 11/05/2015 02:51 PM, John Jason Jordan wrote: > On Thu, 5 Nov 2015 14:17:10 -0800 > Charles <[email protected]> dijo: > >> I have problems keeping my own computers & networks & printers >> functioning reliably. >> And right now, my xubuntu laptop >> is refusing to communicate thru my network >> to my older hp-4100 laser printer. > > According to HP's support site for Linux you should use the HPLIP > driver. Thanks John. I do not know how to double-check to see if that is what is still installed on my xubuntu # 2 laptop; but i presume it likely is that HPLIP driver. Both of my xubuntu laptops were working fine; but then they just suddenly stopped working. > Assuming you are connecting to the HP-4100 via ethernet, The router is connected to the HP-Printer by ethernet, Yes. Laptops are connected to the router wirelessly. > the first step is to determine what IP address the printer is set to. That does sound logical, Yes. And i have seen other teckies begin with that step also. But i am having probs finding my ip-address, as follows: > You can find this out from the printer's control panel. I tried most of the available options; but i could not find data which shows an ip-address; except; i printed-put two "configuration pages" & one of them listed an ip-address as: 0.0.0.0 Im inclined to believe that is not valid data. Two old book-marks to the printer read: http://192.168.1.110/ http://192.168.1.109/hp/device/this.LCDispatcher Both of them return the message: "Unable to connect". > Make sure its IP address is proper for your home network; > i.e., if your home network is (e.g.) 192.168.0.x > make sure the first three numbers that the printer is > set to are also 192.168.0. When i go to "whatismyip.com"; i get: 24.113.182.26 But, i believe that is an "external ip-address", & that we are here looking for an "internal ip-address". Correct? > Jot down the number, or even better, put it > on a label and paste it on the side of the printer. Excellent idea about pasting it to my printer. All i need to do now is to discover what my precise ip-address is. Am hoping you might have some suggestions there. :) > Next, in Xubuntu go to System > Printers. I do not see any icon or data reflecting any "printer pop-up". I waited quite a while; & tried different options here; including "find network printer"; but which just took me to a previously-referenced "Authentication" window, which is demanding a "Password"; but which none of my passwords seem to work for. > Select it and proceed through the series of windows that will pop up. > When you get to the place where you select the driver choose HPLIP. Sounds great; but i cant get that far. > If this doesn't work, report back where it went wrong. I believe i did that, above. > You can also bring your laptop and the printer to > the next Clinic at Free Geek on November 22 (1-5 pm). > The HP 4100 is about 19 kg, > but we have carts and muscles to help. Very Good possibility. Am hoping tho that we might be able to cure the prob before such a desperate move. Id have also to bring in my router. Was also thinking about here by-passing the router, & trying to connect or re-install directly from my laptop to the printer. Is anything like that worth a try? Thanks much; John, Cz ... _______________________________________________ > PLUG mailing list > [email protected] > http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug > _______________________________________________ PLUG mailing list [email protected] http://lists.pdxlinux.org/mailman/listinfo/plug
