A remote printer can be declared in your /etc/printcap file.
You can print to this printer using the lpr filter, say

cat filename | lpr -Premoteprintername

If you don't know how to set this up, the RedHat printtool
is quite useful in setting up a working /etc/printcap and in
providing the necessary print filters.

The same remote printer can be shared by Linux, Windows, Solaris,
etc.

The question of how to print postscript, tex dvi files, plain text,
etc., is a totally different problem. The Printing-HOWTO will
be very helpful here.
