If you are working with a distribution with a package manager, it should
be a simple matter recompiling the source package of a new version of perl
on an older distribution, and then upgrading the old perl package with the
newly compiled perl package.
Don't even consider working from tarballs unless you have a lot of time on
your hands \8)
