It depends on the type, number and value of the items. Books are
duty-free, as long as they're in non-commercial quantities. Electronics
and entertainment media (DVDs, VHS tapes, etc.) will usually be held
until you pay the customs duties.

I have a little fort made of Amazon, Oracle and Rei.com packing boxes in
the back yard...
