Interest in using a *NIX like environment. Been sick and tired of using DOS
and Windows.

It's not really a person but more on events that happened. News of Intel,
IBM or Netscape getting involved with Linux last 1998, I think it's
investing on Red Hat. It was big news back then in the IT world. And also,
furstration that I wasn't able to get my hands on OS/2. Also, having
knowledge on *NIX systems makes most people think you 3l33t. ;) Of course,
not in here anyway. ;)

BBS! I think it's 1994. :) Some BBS have file areas about containing Linux
and GNU stuff., as early as 1994, back when I got into BBSing. And then
there was Alien's Alcove and UP-BBS actively promoting Linux, Aliens even
got their BBS running on Linux. Also, I can't forget Miguel Paraz's QWK
mail-reader's headers that I can see in GoldED. Hehehe.

Well, the first copy of Linux that I got was the one I borrowed from my
classmate (he's subscribing to PLUG). I think it was SuSE Linux 5.1, using
kernel 2.0.34. I was able to borrow the CD just before christmas vacation of
1998 and tried it out. Wasn't able to keep it long in my hard drive cuz I
had to make free space available for tools for our project in school. I
think it was only a few days. :( I only was able to bring back Linux in my
computer when I borrowed a copy of Red Hat 5.2 from a classmate in high
school last MAy 1999. Of course, I had to return to him the CD and had no
back-ups or if I decide to install other programs, that why I decided to buy
my own Linux distro. I bought Slackware 3.6 after a few days.

Curiousity, and being tired of DOS and Windows. Also financial reasons.
Heck, even a CD containing pirated software still costs a lot for a student
that doesn't have a deep pocket. Getting Free Software costs relatively
cheaper, I just have to download 'em if it's small or ask a friend that has
a broadband connection and burn it on a CD-R. ;)

Still using Linux. Same reason as above, although the student thinggy
doesn't apply anymore. I can save money to buy different kinds of "toys for
the big boys." ;)

It's free, as in low-cost (if not zero cost), and freedom. Also, it's highly
hackable, as in you can modify it to suit your needs.
