I was in need of a cost effective solution to try out an Internet server
for use at a school i work for. Doin research on the Net found this thesis
of a stud that suggests using Linux instead of a Solaris or NT box. Found
a slackware linux distro in one of the local bbs (forgot the name of the
BBS) and downloaded it via my 2400 bps modem. I could only get one
diskette per day as connection time was limitted to 30 mins or so.

The need for it. Free and stable OS.

Research on the Web.

Local BBS, then packed with a book (Linux Unleashed)

Found about it on the web. Asking at the STACNET mailing list led me to
the PLUG mailing list. Very few posts at that time. And me asking the
stupidest questions gets answers and not the usuall RTFM thingie. :->

Then Doc Mana talked about samba and Migs introduced "Squid" at aPLUG meet
(was it march 96 or 97?) at ateneo. It was all fun from there. :-)

Around August of 95 maybe.

My own 'puter? Can't afford one till 'bout a few of years back so it
would be '98.

I'd try anything out even if i have to sleep on the manuals to make it
work. Hey! this literally happened :-)

It's stable, It's Free and It works! Works better i should add. he he he.

The command line. Gives you the power to manage the box from a telnet
session.
