Like I said, it looks like you will need the fine-grained permissions that
ACL gives. From your original post it really seemed like you couldn't
allow world to read/write to the file, but only wanted a user2, not part
of group1, to have such access. This is exactly what ACL was designed for.
Unfortunately for now, you will either need to migrate to XFS, or if
you're using ext2 check out <http://acl.bestbits.at/> and figure out how
to patch your system to get ACL support in. According to Namesys, Reiser4,
due out September 2002, will have ACLs. For now it's either a patched ext2
or XFS. Unless of course JFS also has ACLs, but I haven't tried that yet.
