Kernel compile? I thought you said you encountered errors while
patching??? If it's during compile, what version of gcc are you using?
There is a faq entry about some early gcc 2.95.2 or is it 2.95.3 that's in
Debian. I didn't get "hit" by this, though. I upgraded early enough. :)
Also, you may want to disable kdb (kernel debugger). Unless of course you
want to go searching for bugs and need a way to grab that trace to help
the developers out.

If you're using pure potato (2.2), then you shouldn't be playing with the
2.4 kernels. Go get some backported packages that the 2.4 kernels need.

It's really intriguing that you're having so much difficulty with XFS. I
never had such difficulty, and it's not because of DSL. I started using
XFS with a measly dial-up connection, too. :)
