i humbly beg to differ. in my (limited) experience, i've seen linux
successfully infiltrate companies through the server first and then on the
workstations. it's because it's easy to replace server functions transparent
to the users (e.g. internet gateway, radius, web, mail, ftp, file servers,
etc.), well, that is unless they have some customized cluster software
running on their server, in which case they're usually on separate machines.
when they observe that the linux server is stable, robust, and scalable, and
not prone to common worms and viruses, then they start thinking, "hey this is
a great OS, i wonder if i can use it on my desktop as well". then we come in
with staroffice, xmms, aviplay, plaympeg, and friends. dosemu is becoming
quite popular too since a LOT of companies still run legacy clipper apps
which satisfy their requirements, why invest on development/acquisition of
new software if the old one still does the job well?
anyway, this is only what i think,
