I need to clarify this.  If I shutdown X, I have to press the reset
button.  Even the magic sysrq key doesn't do anything.

If I want to shut it down, I have to go to another machine, while X is
still running, and do a shutdown.  X dies late enough in the shutdown
process that everything else is closed and the disks sync'd before it
dies.
