I need to clarify this. If I shutdown X, I have to press the reset button. Even the magic sysrq key doesn't do anything. If I want to shut it down, I have to go to another machine, while X is still running, and do a shutdown. X dies late enough in the shutdown process that everything else is closed and the disks sync'd before it dies.
