a team here at our institute developed a Linux-based terminal to
replace/serve as alternative to a proprietary communications terminal
being used by PAGASA in their weather stations to send meteorological
data through their meteorological telecommunications system (currently
HF radio-based). they were being charged something like P200k per
replacement terminal (overcharge! - it was an LCD terminal based on a
Z80 CPU if i remember correctly). they wanted a terminal that would
interface with their existing system and with the same user interface as
what their observers were trained to use. we hired some students to
implement it using Linux, postfix, uucp, ncurses, and some programming
to implement the communications and (WMO standard) messaging protocol.
there's an article about this work in an issue of the Phil Eng'g Journal
last year. btw, one of the developers (ivy cabeza) is on this list.
