I just want to add that making a cross-over UTP cable is
a standard exercise for 3rd year students at Phil Science
High School. My daughter, who is now 4th year there,
tells me that you will need a crimping tool. You will need
to remove only the outer cover (leave the colored insulation
on the inner wires), line the wires up according to the
color sequence you need, and insert into the connector
properly aligned. A steady pressure on the crimping tool
will clamp the connector into the wires, which becomes
bared as you crimp. If you don't have any experience doing
this, it is best if someone else can do it for you.

I always have a cross-over cable in my bag, so that I can
connect the laptop to our big lan at work, or our small lan
at home.
