the answer revolves around MDI (medium dependent interface) & MDIX (MDI
crossover) ethernet port types.
usually hub/switch ports are configured as MDIX while nic ports are
set as MDI. so when connecting MDIX-to-MDI ports (hub port to nic), you
only need a straight-through cable because there's already a cross-over
wiring on the MDIX port.
the only time you need a crossover cable is when connecting similar port
types like MDI-to-MDI (nic to nic) or MDIX-to-MDIX (switch port to switch
port) because you there must be only 1 crossover/twist between the
connecting ends so that an end's transmit side will always be the other
end's receive side.
sometimes though a hub/switch port is configured as MDI. then, you use a
crossover cable to connect your nic.
